Curtis Media Group proudly announces that its High Country Radio was named as Watauga County’s Small Business of the Year by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce on January 8, 2026.
The Boone Chamber shared that High Country Radio was “recognized for its renewed momentum, community focus, and lasting legacy across the High Country. In the past year, the organization completed the complex relocation of four radio stations, securing a new home for its 60-plus-year-old business and marking its first move in nearly four decades. This transition included the construction of state-of-the-art studios, upgrading technology, while continuing uninterrupted service to listeners during the process.
High Country Radio is an essential connector for the region’s businesses, non-profits, and civic organizations. Through initiatives such as Non-Profit-A-Thons, the New Business Spotlight, and increased participation in community events, the station has expanded its support for local causes and emerging businesses. During and after Hurricane Helene, High Country Radio provided a vital source of trusted information when many communication channels were unavailable, continuing to broadcast despite significant damage to its facilities.
By enhancing its broadcast capacity, investing in local talent, and opening its doors to the community in new ways, High Country Radio has reestablished local radio as a powerful force in the High Country.”
High Country Radio serves the Boone community by offering four live and local stations: WATA-AM (1450 AM, 95.6 FM; High Country News & Info), WWMY-FM/WMMY-FM (Highway 106.1, 102.3; The Best Country, WZJS-FM (99.1, 100.7; Classic Hits), WXIT-FM (95.3, 107.5; PulseBoone). Erica Lackey serves as the General Manager of High Country Radio.
